What we hold, and what deletion actually does

This describes the personal data Motherland Properties collects, why we hold it, who can read it, and how long it stays. The section on deletion is the one worth reading closely: this is an append-only ledger, and we would rather explain that than promise something the system cannot do.

Draft · counsel review required before publication

This document was drafted by the team that built the platform, not by a lawyer. It describes what the system actually does, which is the part we can state accurately. It has not been reviewed against Nigerian law and must not be relied on as though it had been.

What counsel must answer before this page goes live

  1. Does this notice satisfy the NDPA 2023 and the NDPC’s General Application and Implementation Directive 2025 in form and in content?
  2. Is our lawful basis correct for each category: contract for the management relationship, legal obligation for BVN/NIN and AML records, consent for anything else?
  3. Is redaction-with-financial-record-retained a lawful answer to an erasure request, and for how long must the underlying record be kept?
  4. Do we require a registered Data Protection Officer, and must we file anything with the NDPC before launch?
  5. Are our retention periods defensible, and does any Nigerian financial-records rule set a longer floor than we have assumed?
  6. What must this notice say about transfers of personal data outside Nigeria, given diaspora owners and any provider processing abroad?

Who we are

Motherland Properties is the data controller for the information described here. We operate in Lagos, Abuja and Akure. The registered entity details and the contact point for privacy questions are stated on the page for that purpose (see the terms), and are pending the owner’s confirmation before launch.

What we collect, and why

Nothing here is collected because it might one day be useful. Each item exists because a specific part of the service cannot run without it.

Who you are
Name, email address, phone number. Needed to hold an account, to sign you in, and to reach you about your own property.
Identity documents
BVN or NIN, and identity documents where verification requires them. Nigerian banking rules require a verified identity before an account can be opened against a property. We hold these because the law requires it, not because we want them.
Your property
Address, title documents, survey, valuation, tenancy details. This is the substance of the work: a verification with no documents is not a verification.
Money
Every entry posted against your property, the bank account we pay you into, and the statements produced from them. This is the record the whole product exists to keep.
How you use the site
Server logs of requests, retained for operational security. We run no analytics and embed no third-party tracking.

Deletion, honestly

This is the question a privacy page usually answers smoothly and we are not going to.

Your ledger is append-only. An entry cannot be edited or removed. That is not a policy we have adopted; it is the property that makes the record worth anything. A correction is a second entry posted against the first, in the opposite direction, and both stay visible. If we could delete from it, every assurance on this site would be worth less.

So an erasure request does this, and not more than this:

  • Identifying information is redacted. Your name, contact details and identity documents are removed or replaced with a non-identifying reference.
  • The financial record stays, and stays balanced. Amounts, dates and the account codes they moved between remain, because they are the accounting record of money that genuinely moved and because we are required to keep it.
  • Documents you gave us leave with you. Title documents, surveys and evidence files are yours; they are exported and removed.

The plain version: after erasure, the ledger still shows that ₦x moved on a date, and no longer shows whose it was. We will not claim to erase what an accounting record and Nigerian law both require us to keep, and we will not quietly keep your name while saying we deleted it.

Your rights, and how to use them

Under the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023 you may ask for a copy of your data, ask us to correct it, ask us to delete it as far as we lawfully can, object to particular processing, and complain to the Nigeria Data Protection Commission.

Today these requests are handled by a person, not a button. We would rather say that than build a self-service control that half-works. Write to the privacy contact and we will acknowledge within a working week and complete within the statutory period. A self-service export and erasure flow is planned; it is not built, and this sentence changes when it is.

Cookies

This site sets one cookie. It is called ml_session, it exists so that you stay signed in, and it is deleted when your session ends. There is no way to offer the service without it: you cannot be signed in and not be identified as signed in.

We set no analytics, advertising or tracking cookies, and embed no third-party scripts that could set them. That is why there is no consent banner on this site. A banner asking permission for a cookie you cannot decline and still use your account would be theatre, and adding tracking in order to justify one would be worse than pointless.

How long we keep things

Ledger entries and statements
Kept for as long as Nigerian financial-records rules require, and then kept in redacted form because the accounting record must stay complete. Counsel is confirming the minimum period.
Identity documents
Kept while you hold an account with us and for the period anti-money-laundering rules require afterwards.
Server logs
Kept for a short operational window and then discarded.
Your documents
Kept while you hold an account, and released to you when you leave.

Where a period above is not yet a number, that is because counsel has not confirmed the floor. It will be a number before launch, and we would rather leave the gap visible than invent a figure.

The other document

The terms say what we do not promise.

Both documents are drafts under counsel review, and both say so on their face rather than in a footnote.

Motherland Properties · Lagos, Abuja, Akure. We hold client money in accounts opened per property, never pooled, and every naira is posted to a ledger that cannot be edited.

Verification is a professional opinion on the evidence available, not a guarantee against fraud. We say so here because we would rather be trusted than believed.

No bank connected (simulated) · every figure on this site is a real ledger post against a mock rail
